Divisibility rules are helpful mathematical shortcuts that students can use to determine if one number is divisible by another without performing long division. Here are some important divisibility rules that students in 5th grade to 7th grade should know:

  1. Divisibility by 2:
    • A number is divisible by 2 if its last digit is even (0, 2, 4, 6, or 8). In other words, it ends with an even number.
  2. Divisibility by 3:
    • To check if a number is divisible by 3, add up its digits. If the sum is divisible by 3, then the original number is also divisible by 3.
  3. Divisibility by 4:
    • A number is divisible by 4 if the last two digits form a number that is divisible by 4.
  4. Divisibility by 5:
    • A number is divisible by 5 if it ends with either 0 or 5.
  5. Divisibility by 6:
    • A number is divisible by 6 if it is divisible by both 2 and 3.
  6. Divisibility by 7:
    • This rule is less straightforward, but students can learn to recognize patterns and use long division if necessary.
  7. Divisibility by 8:
    • A number is divisible by 8 if the last three digits form a number that is divisible by 8.
  8. Divisibility by 9:
    • Similar to divisibility by 3, to check if a number is divisible by 9, add up its digits. If the sum is divisible by 9, then the original number is also divisible by 9.
  9. Divisibility by 10:
    • A number is divisible by 10 if it ends with a 0.
  10. Divisibility by 11:
    • To check if a number is divisible by 11, subtract the sum of the digits in even positions (1st, 3rd, 5th, etc.) from the sum of the digits in odd positions (2nd, 4th, 6th, etc.). If the result is divisible by 11, then the original number is divisible by 11.
