Intermediate Sudoku

Sudoku is a popular number puzzle that requires logic and deduction to solve. Intermediate Sudoku puzzles can be more challenging than the easy ones but don’t require advanced techniques used in expert-level puzzles. Here are some Sudoku strategies for intermediate users:

  1. Scan for Obvious Numbers (Singles): Always start by scanning the puzzle for any cells with only one possible number. If you find any, fill them in immediately. This is the most basic and crucial strategy.
  2. Check Rows, Columns, and Boxes: Examine rows, columns, and 3×3 boxes to see if a number appears twice. If you find a number that appears only twice in a row, column, or box, you can often determine where it should go.
  3. Crosshatching: Focus on one number at a time and look for cells in rows and columns where that number is missing but could potentially go based on the numbers already filled in the boxes and the overall grid. This method helps identify potential candidates.
  4. Subset Strategy: When you have a group of three cells in a row, column, or box that can only contain three specific numbers, you can eliminate those numbers from other cells in the same row, column, or box. This is called a “naked triple.” The same principle applies to pairs and quads.
  5. Box-Line Reduction: Look for numbers that are confined to a specific box in a row or column. If a number can only go in one row or column within that box, it can be eliminated from the corresponding row or column outside the box.
  6. Candidate Lists: Keep track of the possible numbers for each empty cell in a candidate list (pencil marks). When you eliminate a number as a possibility for a specific cell, remove it from the candidate list for that cell.
  7. X-Wings and Swordfish: These are more advanced techniques but can be useful in intermediate puzzles. They involve identifying patterns of numbers that lead to eliminations in rows and columns.
  8. Use the Process of Elimination: As you fill in more numbers and make progress, revisit the entire puzzle and see if you can spot new possibilities or eliminate numbers from certain cells based on what’s been filled in.
  9. Be Patient: Intermediate-level puzzles may require a bit of trial and error and backtracking. Don’t be afraid to erase a number and try a different one if you get stuck, but try to minimize this as much as possible.
  10. Practice: The more Sudoku puzzles you solve, the better you’ll become. Practice helps you recognize common patterns and strategies more easily.

Remember that Sudoku is a game of logic, and no guessing is required to solve a valid puzzle. With practice and the application of these strategies, you can improve your Sudoku-solving skills and tackle more challenging puzzles.
